AGRICULTURE - A severe drought has taken over all of Illinois, the U.S. Drought Monitor reported in a weekly update.
"In the hottest areas last week, which were generally dry, crop conditions deteriorated quickly," said the update posted Thursday on the agency's website. "In the 18 primary corn-growing states, 30 percent of the crop is now in poor or very poor condition, up from 22 percent the previous week."
Over two dozen southern Illinois counties are experiencing an extreme drought, and 20 Central Illinois are in a severe drought, those include Cass, Logan, Mason, Menard and Schuler counties in the Springfield area.
Sangamon, Christian, McCoupin, Montgomery, and Morgan counties announced moderate drought conditions.
Emergency assistance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture is eligible for 26 counties in southern Illinois.
