Heinkel's Hot Dog Contest Draws A Crowd

Decatur - Even before they started, some contenders looked nervous before the first ever Heinkel's Hot Dog Eating Contest.

Five members of the Decatur media took part in a Celebrity Challenge.  Winning the media challenge was local radio personality Jared Perry.

"You know, I'm the Fourth of July guy that watched Joey Chestnutt dipped those dogs in, so I was just going for the dip and eat.  Now I have all the bragging rights," says Perry.

The main event proved to be a real crowd pleaser, with nearly 500 people lining up to see what all the fuss was about.

Most of the competitors trained for weeks leading up to this, but in the end, Peoria's John Palmgren would be crowned champion.

"I was hoping to do more than I did at the qualifier, which I ate fourteen and that's what I did today,"says Palmgren.

While his efforts would win him $500 and four St. Louis Cardinals tickets, it was the city of Decatur that was the real winner this weekend.
