AFSCME: Recent Pay Raises Should Have Never Been Canceled

SPRINGFIELD - Some unionized state workers will get pay raises that Governor Quinn canceled last year. Around 1700 state employees at the Department of Revenue and nearly 60 at the Criminal Justice Information Authority will get the raise.

AFSCME representative Jeff Bigelow says those raises are a step in the right direction, but that they should have never been canceled in the first place

"They should have honored that contract and the governor tried to get away from honoring the contract. By doing so, he left working families throughout the state without money that they expected to have, they had a right to have, and he essentially took it away from them." said Bigelow.

Bigelow went on to say that AFSCME will continue to fight for the more than 28,000 other state employees, who were also denied contractually guaranteed pay raises.
