Augusta Man Dies in Taylorville Crash Saturday

Taylorville - WAND News now knows the name of the pilot who was killed in a plane crash Saturday in Taylorville.

Christian County coroner Amy Calvert-Winans says 30 year-old Brandon Sparrow of Augusta, Illinois, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Saturday morning crash sent shockwaves throughout the quiet Taylorville neighborhood.

It was just after 11:00 a.m. when a twin engine plane crashed in Jerry Dobyn's backyard.

"We went out there and looked, and my gosh, it just, you can't even tell it's an airplane.  You don't see no airplane parts there at all, just tin and stuff, and a big hole in the ground," says Dobyns.

Blaine Kuhnert was riding his bike just down the block when he saw the plane crash.

"I could hear it, and then when I looked over I seen the plane going down and hit the ground, and it made a big poof of debris," says Kuhnert.

Stephanie Ashby was dropping her mother off across the street when she saw the plane coming down.

Ashby says,"we just got out of the car and heard a loud noise and looked up and it was just coming straight down.  I was crying and shaking."

As for the pilot who lost his life, Ashby says is efforts were something heroic.

"I mean, if he hadn't done what he did, he could have took out I don't know how many of these houses and a lot of lives would have been taken today," says Ashby.

Police say while the FAA and NTSB continue their investigation of what caused this crash, neighbors won't be allowed to return to their homes.
