More Kids Required to Get Whooping Cough Vaccine

Posted:

SPRINGFIELD-- A new Illinois law goes into effect this school year requiring students entering 6th and 9th grades to be vaccinated for whooping cough.

Legislators in Illinois passed a law requiring the vaccination and the Illinois Department of Public Health is putting the law into effect for this school year. Students will need to show proof they received the Tdap vaccine. That's a booster shot against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough.

The requirement comes as Illinois sees an increase in the number of whooping cough cases. Approximately 1,200 cases of whooping cough have been reported in Illinois so far this year. That's compared to 468 cases reported as of Aug. 1 last year.
