SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- The Illinois House has expelled state Rep. Derrick Smith after the Chicago Democrat was charged with bribery.
The House voted 100 to 6 on Friday. Federal prosecutors have accused Smith of taking a $7,000 bribe in exchange for his support on a state grant. Smith has pleaded not guilty.
The House has voted on expulsion only twice in the past century and hasn't tossed out a member since 1905.
