IDOT opens construction zones for Labor Day travel

CHAMPAIGN -- Good news for holiday travelers -- you may be able to avoid construction on your Labor Day weekend trip.

IDOT announced it is closing all the non-emergency construction sites it can on state roadways to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow for motorists.

Road work sites were to close by 3 p.m. Friday through midnight Monday.

Travelers like Victoria Finke say they're happy to avoid the stress of construction zones.

"It's kind of scary with all the yellow cones and stuff," Finke said. "It's nice to know Illinois is making it available for us to make the lanes wider and make it easier for us traveling."

IDOT says some roads will remain closed. To see the list of closed roads by county, click here.
