SPRINGFIELD IL – The Motor Inn Hotel renovation project left some Springfield aldermen unhappy about the change in plans.
Local developers initially planned to use downtown tax increment financing funds to turn the Motor Home Inn on 4th Street into affordable housing space. Now the plan is to use the money to renovate the building for retail space.
Ward seven Alderman Joe Mcmenamin was one of the few who said the change of plans should have been brought before city council. "I was not there two years ago whenever that happened, but certain council members have very specific memories that the developer sold the project in part on the increased housing that would become available for downtown residents."
The city's corporate counsel is reviewing the issue, but do not believe aldermen need to approve the change.
