Springfield, IL - The 11th Annual Route 66 Mother Road Festival got underway Friday evening with the ever popular City Night's Cruise. More than 1,000 custom cars, trucks, and motorcycles took a ride through Springfield, ending downtown for the weekend's festivities.
Event coordinator Jessica Hubley says the festival isn't just for serious car enthusiasts.
"It's really a celebration of all things automotive, so we don't put a year limit or a model limit on the cars. If it's got four wheels, and its a custom car, bring it out. If it's something you're proud of bring it out to the show, we'd love to have it," said Hubley.
The festival isn't just about the cars. Festival president Kim Rosendahl says the weekend is all about celebrating Illinois stretch of America's most infamous road.
"The people, the music, the cars: what people think of as the hay day of Route 66 - the 50's through the 70's," said Rosendahl
