Ill. wants college kids to check smoke alarms

Posted:

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- The Illinois State Fire Marshal is urging college students moving into apartments and dormitories to ensure there are working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

Gov. Pat Quinn proclaimed Saturday "Look Up! Pay it Forward Day" and September as Campus Fire Safety Month.

Students should also identify emergency exits when moving into new places.

Quinn signed a law last month that requires fire sprinkler protection in on-campus dorms at public and private colleges by September 2014.

"Look Up!" was created by Kathleen Moritz in 2005 after her 22-year-old son Tanner Osborn and two others died in an off-campus apartment fire in Chicago. That prompted lawmakers in 2010 to require sprinklers in fraternity and sorority houses.
