Number of Expulsions Down

Springfield IL – The number of expulsions in the Springfield School District has dropped. However, the percentage of minority students getting expelled has not.

Black students make up 38 percent of the school population, but 65 percent of those suspended or expelled in the 2009 through 2010 school year were black.

Administrators said the numbers are a reflection of what students from low income homes often face. More than 70 percent of the district's black students come from low income homes.
