SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Secretary of State Jesse White says more than 6,000 veterans have contributed their memories to the Illinois Veterans' History Project.
The Democrat hosted a ceremony Monday to celebrate his 7-year-old project to collect stories from military veterans into a database.
White says the project "provides a permanent home to honor our country and our veterans."
The Chicagoan served as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division and later in the Illinois National Guard and as a reservist.
After the ceremony White was interviewed and added his own memories to the project.
The ceremony also recognized the Department of Illinois Disabled American Veterans for arranging for interviews and the Illinois Court Reporters Association for providing interview transcribers.
