CHAMPAIGN- Poverty numbers are on the rise in Champaign County.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau's new American Community Survey, nearly one in four people are living in poverty.
Up from 21.3 percent in 2010, the data shows that this past year, 24.9 percent now live below the poverty line. For families, that percentage grew from 8.5 to 11 percent.
Those figures are measured using a set of income thresholds determined by family size and composition.
Karen Kelly, Service Coordinator with the Community Service Center of Northern Champaign County says they serve over 500 families per month.
She says generous donations have allowed them to accomodate the growing number.
