Update: Chicago Police Find More Than 1,000 Pot Plants
CHICAGO (AP) -- It's
harvest time for Chicago
On Wednesday, police were busy chopping down
Christmas-tree size marijuana plants that someone was growing on a chunk of
land the size of two football fields. Officers in a police helicopter spotted
the crop Tuesday on the city's far South Side. Police say whoever was running
the operation was days or weeks away from harvesting the more than 1,000
plants. Once packaged the crop would have been worth as much as $10 million.
Authorities say efforts to remove all the
plants could take a few days.
Police typically try to intercept shipments
of marijuana grown elsewhere. But they say they've never seen such a large
illegal agricultural enterprise, largely because there isn't enough room in the
