Springfield - A 6 year-old Springfield boy is in serious condition after being hit by a van. It happened just before 5 p.m. Thursday night.
The accident took place near the intersection of Stevenson Drive and Sheridan Street.
Police told WAND News the boy was still in the roadway when they arrived. They said the boy apparently ran into the street after a ball, and the driver of a van was unable to avoid hitting him.
"What we believe happened here is that the children ran out, after a ball real quick, and the motorist tried to avoid the accident, but was unable to do so. Sad, disheartening, we did what we normally do, and tried to get help for the child as quickly as we could," Springfield police lieutenant Dyle Stokes told WAND News.
The boy is in serious condition at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.
