Two Under Arrest in Connection with Robberies in Urbana

URBANA - Two people are in custody following separate robberies in Urbana.

The first one happened the evening of October 8, at the Circle K gas station located at 1821 Philo Road. Officers observed the following on surveillance tape:  1) Two suspects entered the store. 2) One suspect brandished a handgun and demanded money. 3) The suspects grabbed money from the cash register and also stole cigarettes and cigars.

The suspects fled the store after being inside for less than one minute.

Upon further investigation, including a review of the surveillance footage from the Circle K and subsequent footage from an armed robbery of the Check 'n Go store the following day (Oct. 9), Urbana police believed the suspect from the Check 'n Go was one of the two offenders in the Circle K robbery.

Further interviewing and investigation affirmed that belief. As a result, charges are now pending against a 15-year old  from Urbana who is currently in custody for Check 'n Go robbery.

As the investigation into the Circle K robbery continued, the second offender was identified. The subject was arrested yesterday, October 18th, at 8:15 am by Urbana police. Kaleb Smith, a 17-year old from Urbana, was transported to the Champaign County Jail.

The investigation into this matter is ongoing. Anyone with further information pertaining to this incident is encouraged to call the Urbana Police Department 217-384-2320. Callers may remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 217-373-TIPS.
