Gary Schmitt Found Not Guilty

Effingham County – The man who admitted to killing his father and stabbing an Edgewood mother and daughter was found not guilty.

The states attorney said Gary Schmitt was found not guilty by reason of insanity. Police said Schmitt killed his father at their Effingham home in 2001. He then stabbed Kimberly Harris and Lauran Hunnington just seven months later.

An Effingham County judge found that Schmitt did not understand the nature of his acts because of mental illness. Schmitt will now be held at a mental health facility for an indefinite period.
