officials are highlighting the work of ombudsmen during the month long
observance of nursing home residents' rights.
Department on Aging Director John Holton
says the Long Term Care Ombudsman Program advocates for residents of nursing
facilities as well as providing services to allow older citizens to remain in
The ombudsmen assist, represent, and intervene
to help more than 100,000 nursing-home residents. They inform residents and
families of their rights, resolve complaints and other issues, and share
information with residents and families.
Gov. Pat Quinn formed the Nursing Home Task
Force in 2009 to examine procedures and industry practices to ensure safety and
appropriate treatment for nursing home residents.
