Area After School Programs Miss Application Deadline for Funding
SPRINGFIELD -- When it comes to strict deadlines, even being an hour late, can mean big consequences.
That's the lesson after school programs in Springfield, Jacksonville and Roodhouse are learning the hard way. The Boys and Girls Club of Central Illinois administers that program. Their application for federal funding was turned in just under an hour after the September 18th deadline. Matt Vanover, spokesman for the Illinois State Board of Education, says because of that, it wasn't considered for federal funding.
"Unfortunately, it was determined that they did not have their information in on time. There were 103 or 104 other applicants that did have their information in on time. There's only about $15 million for all those groups, not all of those programs are going to be funded," said Vanover.
About 850 students usually attend those after school programs. The Boys and Girls Club will be able to reapply in March for the 2013-14 school year.
