Complaint filed against Clinton landfill

Clinton IL – A group of local governments including the cities of Champaign and Decatur have filed a complaint against the Clinton landfill with the state pollution control board.

The complaint alleges the landfill did not seek the proper approval to operate a chemical waste unit, or go through the proper review before building a separate unit to store chemical waste.

The owners of the landfill say the state EPA has already approved a permit modification allowing it to bury PCB'S and a Federal permit is pending.  There are concerns those PCB'S could contaminate the Mahomet Aquifer, which sits below the landfill site.

The landfill's owners contend those fears are unwarranted.
