Retail Expanding Just in Time for Holiday Shopping
SPRINGFIELD -- The White Oaks Mall has just undergone a multimillion dollar renovation, that's just part of a city-wide effort to offer area shoppers more choices, and to grab a bigger chunk of your holiday spending.
Jacquie Lement just finished up some of her holiday shopping Tuesday afternoon. She says she's impressed with the mall's new look, and options.
"I think it looks a lot better, I've noticed the new carpet and new escalators, it looks good. I like a lot of the sports stores, the kitchen stores, clothes," said Lement.
Lement's from Beardstown, as a consumer, she's the perfect example of what Springfield is trying to achieve, according to Mayor Mike Houston.
"Bringing people from all over the Central Illinois area to Springfield," said Houston.
Houston says, aside from improvements at White Oaks, there's another draw for Central Illinois shoppers.
"We're very close to having an announcement for a groundbreaking for the outlet mall next to Scheel's," said Houston.
The 80-store outlet mall has no set construction schedule just yet, but Houston hopes groundbreaking will happen later this year.
"We're really just at the beginning of people who are now willing to make some major investments," said Houston
