Burglars targeting Clinton mom and pop shops

CLINTON -- Small mom and pop shops are targets of recent burglaries in Clinton.

Most of them are happening along Clinton's two main highways -- Business Route 51 and Route 54.

Police told WAND nine different businesses have been hit in the past six weeks. Restaurants like El Rey's have been burglarized twice.

In some cases, Clinton Police Chief Michael Reidy said the thieves are getting away with well over $1,000 cash.

"They're going right in, and they do a pretty good job of ransacking," Reidy said. "They take papers and throw them out. They're going through stuff, and they're doing it relatively quickly."

Police believe the criminals could even be local customers.
