Decatur's St. Mary's hospital is saving more lives with its new state-of-the-art catheterization laboratory.
The project cost nearly $7million. Patients were already being serviced in the two cath labs. With the extra room, doctors will see hundreds of people each month.
St. Mary's Dr. Jeffrey Goldstein, MD said,"we are currently doing 90 to100 diagnostic procedures every month in these labs and between 40 and 50 intervention coronary procedures each month."
Local doctors and some from Springfield are able to operate in the cath lab 24 hours a day and seven days a week.
Doctor Goldstein added, that before the addition, patients had to travel to different cities or were transferred to other hospitals for cardiovascular services. Now they can be assessed and treated in Decatur.
The cath lab not only helps people with cardiovascular issues, it also treats emergency procedures.
