More crime during holiday shopping season

Posted:

DECATUR -- Holiday sales are almost here, but police say the shopping season is high time for crime.

Cops say this time of year is peak time for crimes like shoplifting, home burglaries and car break-ins.

Macon County Sheriff Tom Schneider told WAND criminals are looking for quick ways to get away with something, and a trunk full of gifts can be an easy target.

"People are wanting to help a family member and give that special gift," Schneider said. "And when times are tough like this, they do whatever they can to try and get that property, unlawfully in some cases. And when doing so, creates a problem for everybody."

You can protect yourself by staying alert in parking lots and always keeping your items locked and out of sight.
