Police focus on safety belts, impaired drivers

Posted:

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois state officials are launching an end-of-year "Drive to Survive" campaign to reduce the number of traffic fatalities.

The Illinois Departments of Transportation and Illinois State Police launched the effort Tuesday.

State police and 300 law enforcement agencies across the state will begin the effort by boosting traffic patrols during the heavily traveled Thanksgiving holiday weekend. They will be on the lookout for drunk or otherwise impaired drivers and motorists who are not wearing safety belts.

Enforcement efforts will focus on the deadly nighttime hours -- 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. -- when more motorists and passengers die in vehicle crashes than at any other time of the day.

Police will use roadside safety checks, seat-belt enforcement zones and other "saturation" patrols to spot violators.
