CHAMPAIGN - A record number of Champaign County families have applied for the Salvation Army's annual Christmas Assistance Program.
Social Services Director Jennifer Valade says nearly 1800 applied, up from about 1400 last year. She says the number of children being served has risen 38 percent, and they are seeking thousands of toy donations.
Through the program, families are provided with a Christmas dinner grocery voucher and toys for children up to high school ages.
They hope to collect 15,000 toys, which will be distributed at the North Market Street location the week before Christmas.
Toys for Tots helps provide toys, and both organizations are seeking volunteers to collect and distribute.
