Apartment fire near U of I campus in Champaign


Champaign IL – Several people have been removed from their apartments after a fire near the U of I campus.


Just before 3:30 this morning firefighters were called to a three story apartment building in the 100 block of East John Street. Firefighters found a kitchen fire and heavy black smoke throughout the first and second floors.


A visitor to the apartment jumped from the second story window to escape a large flash of fire. The occupant in the apartment had minor burns and did not receive medical treatment.


Firefighters found a byproduct of chemicals cooking on the stove after Investigators removed a couch that had been placed on the stove to put out the fire.


The FBI has been informed of the event, and a bomb squad is on stand by at the scene. It could be several hours before residents can return to their apartments.


Just before 11am Champaign Police Department's made an arrest, after an investigation of the fire. Police arrested 22 year old Austin Povilaitis of Edina Minnesota. Povilaitis was arrested for a crime of Reckless Conduct.
