U of I Student Arrested for Fire

CHAMPAIGN- A U of I student is behind bar, accused of starting a chemical fire.

Just before 3:30 am on Wednesday, firefighters were called to 105 East. John Street.

Investigators say 22-year-old Austin Povilaitis had been cooking chemicals that led to a fire. He attempted to put out the flames with a couch.

Police say Povilaitis had one visitor at the time, who jumped out the window to escape.

The visitor reported no injuries while Povilaitis suffered minor burns. He refused treatment and was transported to the Champaign County jail.

Povilaitis is charged with Reckless Conduct although more charges could follow later. Champaign police say the investigation is ongoing. FBI will be aiding with the investigation.
