Mobile devices at risk for cybershopping scams

DECATUR -- If you're doing your holiday shopping on a mobile device like an iPhone or iPad, you could be at risk of a scam.

Richland technology expert Jack Adwell told WAND hackers are stealing identities right inside some favorite stores. That's because mobile devices like laptops, tablets and smart phones are less secure in wi-fi hot spots.

Adwell said a store's wi-fi could really be a hacker in disguise.

"If you're out at a restaurant, or you're at a motel someplace, or wherever you may be... even at work.... and you're on a wi-fi, that network is not secure," said Adwell.

Secure sites will show "https" in the URL. A padlock icon will also appear on safe shopping sites.
