Champaign man fleeing police falls in icy pond


Champaign IL – A man is dead after falling through ice while he was running from police.


The Champaign County Coroner says 20 year old, Kenneth Brown Junior died at Carle Hospital around one Wednesday morning. Champaign Police were called to McAlister's Deli on West Town Center Boulevard just before four Tuesday, for a report of a disorderly person.


Brown Junior then ran north across Town Center Boulevard, he was spotted by officers and ran on an iced over retention pound south of Menards. He fell through the thin ice into 20 degree water.


Police called the fire department, who rescued Brown Junior, with help from the Corn Belt Fire Dive and Rescue Team. Police are investigating the death and an autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.
