Company replies to lawsuit in trooper's death

Posted:

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- The trucking company being sued over a wreck that killed an Illinois State Police trooper says it has no evidence the driver's medical conditions played a role in the accident.

Dot Foods Inc. and the Georgia trucker face a wrongful-death lawsuit filed by Trooper Kyle Deatherage's widow.

Deatherage was working a traffic stop along a freeway near Litchfield on Nov. 26 when the passing trucker lost consciousness. His tractor-trailer struck and killed the trooper.

In a statement, the company says the driver was a military veteran with an unblemished driving record, despite his medical issues.

Dot says he was operating in accordance with federal transportation guidelines. The company also says it wasn't aware of any reason why the trucker couldn't safely operate a tractor-trailer under federal regulations.
