Secretary of State: Immigrant Driver's Licenses Will be Implemented Responsibly

SPRINGFIELD -- Undocumented immigrants will soon be able to apply for temporary visitor driver's licenses. The Secretary of State, Jesse White's office is confident the program will be implemented responsibly.

White's spokesperson, Henry Haupt, says the program is intended to fund itself through application fees. Those who apply will not receive a license without auto insurance.

"This is a big responsibility for our office, but we will implement it in a way that is not only good for individuals coming in for a TVDL, but for the rest of the public," said Haupt.

Governor Quinn is expected to sign the bill into law soon. The Secretary of State's office will have just under a year to launch the program.
