The dawn of the digital age has brought about a new form of bullying known as cyberbullying. According to bullyingstatistics.org, more than 1 in 3 young people have been victims of online threats showing just how widespread the problem is. Kids Email, an online provider of safe email for children, has released an eBook detailing this new phenomenon and how to protect children from it.
Jacob Andersen, founder and CEO of Kids Email stated "The old adage of sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me isn't valid. The psychological effects of cyberbullying in terms of self-esteem are far-reaching. Studies have shown cyberbullying can lead to depression, anxiety and even suicide. We published the eBook to help parents become educated on the topic with the hope they talk to their kids about it."
Cyberbullying occurs when technology such as the Internet, email, social media, computers and cell phones are used to harass or bully another individual. Cyberbullying behaviors can include name-calling, spreading rumors, identity theft, sexually explicit messages and photos and more.
Andersen said one of the main reasons he founded Kids Email was to protect young people from being cyberbullied. Kids Email is a safe email service for kids and families. It allows kids and teens to have a safe email account while allowing their parents to be aware of correspondence they are receiving and sending. Parents can sign up for a trial account at kidsemail.org.
Andersen goes on to say, "Cyberbullying: The Truth Behind the Shocking New Internet Trends was written to educate parents on how to recognize cyberbullying and offers different strategies for combatting this trend in the family and in the classroom."
