Skry's The Limit: December 2012 and January 2013 Archives

First off--how is it already the end of January? Where did this month go??? I having a feeling 2013 is going to fly by!

Anyway, a lot of viewers have been asking about Riley and I thought I would give you all an update. Yes, I was under the weather at home with him this week....not ideal! While I was spending my days on the couch, I kept having to force him on his little bed next to me. Needless to say, there was a lot of "No Riley, don't even think about the coach" going on this week.

Riley's surgery went great. He tore his ACL. They drilled holes in his bone and used a band to simulate a ligament. We were able to pick him up that night and I think he was a little confused and annoyed with us in his comatose stage. Yes, he's looking up at us thinking, "why did you let them shave my leg and tush?!?!". I think he feels violated. It sure doesn't help that I like to plaster pictures of him all over the internet!

So the recovery is going slow and we're trying to get creative when it comes to leaving him alone and away from furniture. Mr. Skry thought a baby gate would work perfect. We left him for about 4 hours and here's what happened:

Yes, that is Riley on the OPPOSITE side of the gate. He somehow ripped his way through and he was greeting us at the door when we got home. Crazy dog! He's not letting his injury getting in the way of escaping. So what did we do today?

He's sporting the cone in a kennel (ignore the odd eyes--the red eye feature didn't work too well today). He was not a happy camper when I left for work. The cries and barking started the moment I shut the door...and I'm sure he'll go on for hours. He has a long history of separation anxiety, hence why we usually let him have free reign of the house. Any suggestions for calming him/keeping him off of the furniture? He still has about 6-8 weeks before he can roam free.

Do you ever wonder why we look the way we do? What's with the bright suit colors? The giant bauble necklaces? The poofy hair? It's simple--we are given advice on what looks good. The news biz is a strange industry. While I would like to think people tune in four our brains, I know that it is a very visual business. Think about it: Would you want to watch us in jeans and a sweatshirt, no makeup, hair in a pony tail? I wouldn't make you suffer through that!

We already work with the wonderful ladies at Merle Norman in Decatur for our makeup. They do a great job of making sure we are ready for the bright lights and HD. So, this week we had a wardrobe consultant visit the station. She met with each of the "on air talent" and spent time telling us which colors looks best on us and how to improve our look. I've been on air for many years, so this isn't my first go-around. Check out my closet:

And this is just one of my suit closets! Yes, I own dozens of suits! While I would love to be more casual and wear sweaters or shirts everyday, this is a more conservative television market...seems like a suit jacket is the appropriate attire. Anyway, the brighter the color, the better on air! Colors sure "pop". So if you don't see me wearing a bright suit, I'm probably sporting black with a bright bauble necklace. The consultant was great. It's always good to get a refresher course and I really think she helped out the younger reporters. Boy, I would have LOVED some help early on in my career. I dug through some old pictures...here's one from my first anchor job in Nebraska. Do you think I've come a long way?!?

Ok, onto the hair. My co-anchors over the years have always joked with me about my "helmet hair/anchor hair". I somehow turned up on a website that had a contest all about on air talent and hair. It sure brought on plenty of chuckles! When I was younger, I had the typical anchor bob that you see so many females sport. A few years ago I decided to grow it out. Luckily our consultant said, "Stick with the long, it makes you look younger"! Anything to make people think I am in my 20's, right?!?

So that's my look in a nutshell. It's been fun to look through old pictures and see how I've grown up in the business. I'm a pretty classic and simple dressing gal. I tend to jazz up my outfits with fun necklaces. I'm sure my style isn't everyone's cup of tea, but you should see me on the weekends....minimal make up and jeans!

Let the cooking commence!!! If you read my blog or follow me on Facebook, you know that I love to cook and bake. Well, good news--I will soon be cooking on WAND TV! I'll get to my idea in a moment...but first, check out this oldy but goody!

Can you tell that I loved to eat chocolate at a young age? Yes, that's me in the early 1980's helping my mom ice a cake. I used to always wear chocolate on the corners of my mouth, just savoring every last drop. The funny thing--I still have that problem! Give me a chocolate ice cream cone and you'll still find chocolate all over my face.

Anyway, I've done many different cooking segments in my career. At one station, I used to bring viewers on the set (yes we had a built in kitchen!) and they would cook with me. At another station, I went to the viewer's house and cooked with them. Some of my all-time favorite recipes are from viewers!

So here is where you come in. I need your help developing my new cooking segment. I'm going to start them in a few weeks. At first, they will be short segments where I will show you the finished product and talk about the recipe. Then I'll post the recipe for everyone on my COOKING BLOG. Yes, I am starting my separate cooking blog this weekend. So, it will be up and running in time for these television segments! My question is--What should we name the segment/blog? I received several suggestions a while back, but I'm still trying to search for the perfect one. Skry's Kitchen and Stirrin' With Stacey were tossed around. Any others? Also, I want your recipes! I really want this segment to be interactive. I am always looking for new recipes and I figured that I would turn to you guys for some help. Some weeks I'll share my recipes on tv, others will be from you. So, start sending me your suggestions! Click on the link below to contact me through email, Facebook or Twitter. Thanks!

Happy New Year! And no, I won't bore you with my New Year's resolutions. Truth be told, I don't really make them. Sure there are little things I'd like to change, but I tend to do it throughout the year...instead of making an official "resolution".

This month marks nearly a year that I've been at WAND and living in Central Illinois. I guess the saying is true, "Time flies when you're having fun"! This past year seems like a blur. Part of me feels like I just arrived from Idaho, the other feels like I've been part of the newsroom here for decades. It's always nerve wracking starting a new job, but I remember vividly my first week at WAND. Within hours of being here, I really felt at home. The people were so welcoming and that made for an easy adjustment. Plus, I was live on air my first day, so that doesn't give you much time to be nervous :)

Looking back, I realize how much fun we really do have at WAND. From trying fried food at the State Fair to playing with adorable puppies, I truly have the greatest job around (yes, I'm bias!). It doesn't hurt that Dawn and Sean are a blast to anchor with! Sure I was a little hesitant leaving Boise and a home I absolutely loved. But, Mr. Skry put it best when he told me I'm given these amazing opportunities and it's a great way to explore different parts of the country. He looks at the move as an "adventure" and he's absolutely right. I have lived all over the country (7 states to be exact) and it's so neat to know that I have a unique group of friends all over.

So cheers to a fun year in the books here in Central Illinois. 2012 was an amazing year of change, I can only imagine what this next year will bring! By the way, Mr. Skry and I had a chance to visit the Skrysak clan in San Diego last month. I posted a few pics below. First, Ryan is a natural with little kids. He met our little niece Sarah for the first time and she just loved Uncle Ryan.

Second, how many presents do we really need? Check out under the tree--yes the majority were for the little 5 month old!

I'm officially in the Christmas spirit!! The reason? Our WAND holiday party. This year there was a theme--Ugly Sweater Party. It's actually a pretty popular theme these days, so it was no surprise that Mr. Skry and I couldn't find anything good at the thrift stores in Springfield. While some people might give up, we decided to "go big or go home"! We found some lovely red sweaters at a bargain (Ryan's was actually a women's cardigan circa 1985) and we proceeded to create our own ugly sweaters. Here's a sign that you're a married couple: we happily spent our Friday night at home, watching Dateline and decorating sweaters. Yes, my husband is a VERY good sport. He armed himself with a glue gun and lots of frills and went to work. What do you think?

Ryan made mine and I made his. I went for a 12 Days of Christmas theme. That gold blob on his shoulder? It's a partridge in a pear tree! I even sewed bells all over. He really went to town on my sweater, creating a massive Christmas tree, complete with lights and presents underneath.

We had an absolute blast at the shindig. It really made me appreciate where I work and who I work with. It definitely says something about WAND when we all enjoyed spending time with each other on our day off. It's so often people like the weekend to "escape" from work, but we're like a big family. Plus, it was great to meet everyone's significant others! We're usually on our best behavior when the cameras are turned on, so it was fun to see the news department let loose. Check out Sean Streaty below--his wife created a stellar sweater that he was happy to sport!

Now that the holiday season is in full swing, I'll be spending this coming weekend racing around stores finishing up my Christmas shopping. And of course, I'll be spending every other moment in the kitchen baking up a storm! I usually make a ton of cookies, but I'm thinking of bringing my coworkers bread this year. How does Banana Chocolate Chip bread and Blueberry Poppy seed bread sound?!?

Hello December, where's the winter weather?!?! No complaints here, other than putting away all of my spring/summer clothing. I'm currently boiling in a wool sweater as I type this blog post! When I saw the forecast, I put away the tights and decided on wearing a skirt with "bare legs" for the news. I don't know the last time I haven't been in boots and tights this time of year. I looked at some old pictures today, and sure enough, this is what I found:

That's Ryan snow blowing our driveway in Boise. The date: December 1st, 2010. Yes, mother nature sure confuses us! As I ponder the warm temperatures, I have to wonder where the entire year has gone?!? It was just about a year ago when I was deciding my future, which ultimately led me to Illinois. I feel like it was just yesterday when we were complaining about the summer heat!

I'll save the whole reminiscing/looking back blog post for another day. We still have lots to look forward to the last few weeks of the year. My kitchen will soon be taken over with the smells of my grandmothers cookies....yes, I bake a TON for the holidays! Mr. Skry and I will be heading to San Diego for a brief holiday vacation to see my family. And, you can guess that we'll be filling our last weeks of 2012 with a whole lot of football--let the college bowl season begin!

Make the most of the last few weeks of the year. The New Year will be here before we know it! I'll leave with a funny picture I had to share. WAND's holiday party has an "Ugly Sweater" theme this year. So, I was racing around town trying to find something. I finally decided to make our own. So I'll post some pictures of the finished product next week after our party, but here's Mr. Skry and his ugly sweater from last year. He borrowed it from a friend...I'm pretty sure it's a bright pink women's sweater!!!
