Decatur salt crews hit roads

DECATUR -- Over a dozen city salt crews were hitting the streets Tuesday afternoon, laying down some of the 800 tons of city salt used so far this year.

That may seem like a lot, but Decatur Municipal Services Manager, Dick Borders, said it doesn't even come close to what's used during a typical winter.

"Typical winter, it's generally more like 2,000 tons of salt," Borders said. "Bad winter, it's 3,000 tons."

Because of the past two mild winters, public works has focused on other projects the city normally wouldn't tackle until spring, ;like repairing roads, sidewalks and curbs.
