Shelbyville – The historic Chautauqua Auditorium has been saved from the wrecking ball.
The Shelbyville City Council will not accept demolition bids to tear down the building, thanks to a community effort. The community has raised more than 33 thousand dollars to save it.
It has been in a state of disrepair for years, and expensive insurance forced the city to search for answers. The building was estimated to cost at least one hundred fifty thousand dollars for structural repairs.
A full restoration will cost an estimated 1.7 million dollars.
