DECATUR - The NAACP Decatur Branch sponsored a candidates forum for the City Council and Richland Community College Board of Trustees at the Decatur Public Library Thursday night.
A wide range of topics were discussed.
In the Decatur City Council race, Jerry Dawson, Pat McDaniel, and Julie Moore-Wolfe are running for their second full term on the council. They are being challenged by newcomer Derrick Thaxton. Craig "Woody" Wilson is on the ballot but said he is no longer running.
Candidates were asked, among other topics, about a proposal to roughly double water rates in three years. The candidates stressed they do not want to see rates increase but the water system needs to be improved; such improvements take revenue. Thaxton said there is obviously a need for more water but stated he needed more time to study the situation before supporting an increase in water rates.
The race for Richland Board of Trustees includes incumbent Dale Colee newcomers Josh Rohrschleib and David Cooprider.
Topics included a heated discussion over accessibility.
Specifically, candidates sparred over a policy that requires people who want to speak at board meetings to contact the college administration weeks in advance.
Diversity and sports were also among the topics covered.
