Late snowstorm dumps 17 inches on Springfield

Springfield, Ill. (AP) -- The weekend spring snowstorm that swept across central Illinois slammed Springfield with a record 17 inches.

The storm was blamed for dozens of car accidents and forced officials in the state capital to declare a snow emergency.

Schools throughout the area canceled classes for Monday.

Sunday's snowfall smashed the area's record for the highest snow total for March 24. The previous record was 2.4 inches in 1947.

The storm also left some without power. In Montgomery County, Ameren Illinois reported 1,200 people were without power Sunday. Another 258 people in Mason County also were without power.

With temperatures forecast to rise, the snow won't stick around long.

Temperatures should reach 40 degrees by Wednesday and climb as high as 55 degrees by Friday.
