Urbana soldier gets medal for heroism

Champaign, Ill. (AP) -- A soldier from Urbana is getting a medal for heroism after he pulled three family members from a burning car.

Staff Sgt. Mark Rogers will receive a Soldier's Medal during a special ceremony in Champaign on Thursday.

The medal recognizes heroic acts outside of a "direct encounter with an enemy."

Rogers is getting the medal for smashing a windshield and pulling his wife and two children from the family's burning car after it was hit by a tractor trailer in 2008. His arm was severely burned.

The 37-year-old is set to receive the medal from Republican U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis.
