Teachers' jobs cut at Springfield schools

SPRINGFIELD -- Sixteen teaching positions will be cut at Springfield Public Schools.

The board voted Monday night the eliminate the full-time teaching jobs, along with 11 intern positions -- seven of those in administration.

This comes as part of $6 million dollars in budget cuts passed in February.

Current School Board President Susan White said the district is facing an $11 million deficit.

"We only ended up cutting about six million dollars, and that was only half," said White.  "We have really another half to go."

The school district said it expects all teachers whose jobs are being cut to be re-hired in other positions within the district.
