Students to attend Earth Day events at state parks

Springfield, Ill. (AP) -- More than 1,000 students selected earlier this year will get the chance to spend time outdoors and help preserve Illinois' state parks.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is holding events involving the students in April and May in connection with Earth Day.

School groups were selected randomly by drawings after an application process. The participants include schools in Springfield, Marshall, Pinckneyville and Chicago.

Marc Miller is the department's director. He says it's a chance for students to protect natural resources.

The students will be planting native wildflowers and grasses, building bird feeding stations and removing invasive plant species.
