Champaign – You have the chance to properly dispose of medication this weekend.
From 10-2 Saturday afternoon you can drop off your extra meds at participating Walgreens. Police do not examine the pill bottles. You can drop them off and they will box them up. From there the DEA takes care of proper disposal something you can't do at home.
Police say many people have heard the message don't flush the medications, so they put them in the garbage. People don't realize is that the garbage goes to a landfill in most cases, and then makes it into our water.
Pollution Prevention Specialists say pills that make it to landfills can cause health problems for fish and other animals, and perhaps long term issues for us. You can minimize this risk by proper disposal.
