Teacher honored after subduing student with gun

Posted:

Normal-- A Normal Community High School teacher has been honored for tackling and subduing a student who pulled a gun in class last year and fired shots into the ceiling.

Derrick Schonauer received a Courage Award from the Illinois Education Association. Schonauer was a teacher for less than two weeks when the incident happened on Sept. 7. No one was injured and the boy was sentenced in March to juvenile detention.

Education association president Cinda Klickna says Schonauer's bravery and dedication set a good example for all educators. Schonauer has gotten other honors too. He was given an American Red Cross of the Heartland Public Service Heroes Award in November. The McLean County Unit 5 school board also lauded him for his actions.
