High School teacher has been
honored for tackling and subduing a student who pulled a gun in class last year
and fired shots into the ceiling.
Derrick Schonauer received a Courage
Award from the Illinois Education Association. Schonauer was a teacher for less
than two weeks when the incident happened on Sept. 7. No one was injured and
the boy was sentenced in March to juvenile detention.

Cinda Klickna says Schonauer's bravery and dedication set a good example for
all educators. Schonauer has gotten other honors too. He was given an American
Red Cross of the Heartland Public Service Heroes Award in November. The McLean
County Unit 5 school board also lauded him for his actions.
