Credit counselors warn of foreclosure scams

SPRINGFIELD -- Scam companies are asking for fees up-front to stop your foreclosure.

But credit counselors warn if the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.

ClearPoint Credit counselor Victoria Brown said home foreclosures are public record, and that's how scammers are tracking down victims.

"They can search public records, and that's how they are contacting a lot of people," said Brown.

"It's a very stressful situation, and they're calling saying 'We can help you with this or we can get this stopped.'"

If you are facing foreclosure, real help is available.

Contact a housing or credit counseling service like ClearPoint or call the Illinois Foreclosure Prevention Network's hotline at 855-KEEP-411.
