Boy Scouts Pay Tribute to Abe Lincoln

Posted:

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- More than 1,000 Boy Scouts are helping to clean up a 20-mile trail in central Illinois as they retrace steps taken by a young Abraham Lincoln.

The Boy Scouts are participating in the annual Lincoln Trail hike. It starts in New Salem, where Lincoln spent his early adulthood. The hike ends in Springfield, where he practiced law.

Scouts pick up trash along the trail as they hike.

Lisa Bonnett is director of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. She says the hikers are serving others -- just as Lincoln did.

The hike is part of the Boy Scouts' 67th Annual Lincoln Pilgrimage, which honors the life, accomplishments and ideals of the nation's 16th president.
