DECATUR —St. Mary's Hospital has been recognized nationally by Practice Greenhealth, the nation's leading health care membership community, for the hospital's efforts in promoting environmental sustainability. These efforts included: establishing action plans to eliminate mercury, reducing and recycling solid waste, creating healing environments, and establishing green purchasing policies. Environmental sustainability measures result in significant savings for hospitals, without increasing any operating costs.
"Protecting the health of our patients, staff and community is our priority," said Theresa Rutherford, COO of St. Mary's Hospital. "Practice Greenhealth's recognition with this award is confirmation that we are doing all we can to accomplish that and secure the future of the environment."
