Defense: No motive for Illinois family's slayings

Posted:

Peoria -- An attorney representing a central Illinois man who's accused of killing five members of his ex-wife's family says prosecutors never presented a believable motive for the crimes.

In closing arguments Thursday, Dan Fultz says the case against Christopher Harris rests mainly on testimony from the man's brother, Jason, who he says lied frequently in interviews with police.

Fultz also told jurors they can't judge Christopher Harris on whether they like him. Harris admits he went to the Beason home in 2009 after a night of drugs and drinking.

Harris says he killed one family member but contends he walked in as 14-year-old Dillen Constant was killing the rest of the family.

Earlier Thursday, a prosecutor mocked Harris' claim that he killed Constant in self-defense.

Jurors could begin deliberating later Thursday.
