SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- The Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal is offering tips for staying safe around the house during the 100th anniversary of National Home Safety Month.
State Fire Marshal Larry Matkaitis saID, homeowners should be especially aware while cooking in the kitchen, grilling and camping during the summer.
Matkaitis saID, preparedness includes working smoke alarms, a home safety kit with a battery-powered weather radio and fire extinguishers. He said, families also should make plans for emergencies including fire, tornado and earthquake; keep a stocked first-aid kit and keep flammable materials inaccessible outdoors.
Emergency phone numbers should be readily available, matches and lighters should be out of children's reach and seniors should be checked regularly.
