Phone Scam in Central Illinois

Christian County Sheriff Bruce Kettelkamp is warning the citizens about an Extortion Scam. Criminals call the victims stating that they are a collection agency and that the victim owes money on a bill and that if they did not pay they would have an arrest warrant issued for them.

The next day the victim receives a voice mail on his cell phone from Christian County Sheriff's Office phone number 217-824-4961. The message states that there is an arrest warrant for the victim and that they are to contact Investigator Johnson at the Sheriff's Office. The victim is told to call Investigator Johnson at 901-248-6242 to make arrangement on how to take care of the warrant and pay off the money that they owe. Once contacted the criminal then instructs the victim to go to the nearest Walgreen or Wal-Mart Store and purchase a Green Dot Money Pak 14 digit scratch off card for $450.00.

This is a similar scam that occurred in the (217) area code in December of 2012 were the criminals identified themselves as being DEA agents telling the victims that they were being fined for purchasing illegal drugs over the internet.

The criminal in this scam has a foreign accent and was able the spoof the Sheriff Office's phone number. If anyone receiving these calls immediately hang up on the caller and notify the Christian County Sheriff Office.
