Mattoon Police to honor Arkansas Officer


MATTOON - Some members of the Mattoon Police Department will soon be heading to Bryant, Arkansas to honor an officer injured during a shootout in April.

Bryant, Arkansas Officer Scott Johnson was the first on the scene when Thomas O'Dell, wanted for first degree murder and armed robbery in Mattoon, was seen breaking into a store in Arkansas.

Police say O'Dell fired shots at police and hit Officer Johnson.

The Bryant Police Department confirmed Johnson was shot twice in the hand and once in the shoulder as he returned fire.

O'Dell died shortly after the shoot-out.

Officer Johnson was treated and released after suffering non life-threatening injuries.

Mattoon Police plan to honor Johnson in Arkansas by presenting him with a plaque on June 27.
